GMail: they have keyboard shortcuts! Slash goes to the search box, and even more amusingly: vim-style navigation, with j and k moving up and down between messages.
It's hard to define the sandboxes well: vim/emacs want pretty much every possible key combo so if I ever embed them into another program everything breaks.
But yeah, for the simple case of a web browser embedding pages, the only real application I can see for overriding key shortcuts is for a spam page to override all shortcuts (like "close window") into "set as home page".
