patent doom

I've always thought of the software patent world as a sort of mutually-assured-destruction stalemate, where everyone stockpiles just to increase the madness of firing.

How appropriate, then, that the NYT drew an image of crossing missile tracks straight out of a war game simulation:


I've never met a person within the industry who thinks software patents are a good idea. As far as I can tell the spectrum is delineated instead by people who grudgingly, reluctantly participate, and those who refuse altogether. At best, all I can hope is that the current round leaves such pointless excessive destruction in its wake that we're forced to reform, somehow.
