kleinberg macarthur

Jon Kleinberg won a MacArthur grant. As I just mailed a coworker:
Kleinberg is a stud. I still have (somewhere around here) a video of a talk he gave at my school when I was a sophomore or so. I was impressed enough to go to the trouble of ripping the streaming-only video my school provided.

I wish I had more time/motivation/understanding to be able to follow more of his area of research...

freedom to tinker

I've seen mention of Freedom to Tinker many times, but I always mentally put it off as some sort of engadgety waste of time. But then I saw Ed Felten speak and I realized why this website is repeatedly mentioned -- it's really good.

Felten is a computer scientist with an interest in public policy, which means he can make informed arguments about issues that we care about: for example, it's well known to technologists that DRM cannot work, but that doesn't mean the lawmakers get it. Try his latest post, regarding DRM, for starters, and then this bit on secrecy in science for variety. I keep going back.
