photo tagging

Brad was telling me about this photo tagging project today. It's pretty fancy! (If you want to play with it and happen to see me in person sometime, feel free to ask me to use my account.)

I've considered importing my pictures into PicPix a few times -- I'm pretty confident the LJ crew can hack out the features I care about faster than pretty much anybody -- but I'm always a little scared that I'll hate it and one day not be able to get my pictures out.

Dude, one of the root goals of the project was it should be the hub of your distributed backups. The Perl command-line client has excellent backup support... I use it regularly from multiple hosts:

$ fotoup.pl --backup

(reads your ~/.fotoup.conf)

By "excellent" I mean it does it iteratively, compares checksums of known files, optionally learns what files you have categorized on your local machine in different ways and sets up symlinks to them instead (if you delete the files later, it'll redownload them).

And you get all the metadata too of all pictures in an XML file.

evan	Actually, peripherally on this subject... part of the reason I don't tag my posts is that the LogJam interface for it is too lacking: it's just an empty text box. This is in part because I can't get my list of tags out of LJ. Otherwise I could do some sweet auto-completing of posts too.
