freedom to tinker

I've seen mention of Freedom to Tinker many times, but I always mentally put it off as some sort of engadgety waste of time. But then I saw Ed Felten speak and I realized why this website is repeatedly mentioned -- it's really good.

Felten is a computer scientist with an interest in public policy, which means he can make informed arguments about issues that we care about: for example, it's well known to technologists that DRM cannot work, but that doesn't mean the lawmakers get it. Try his latest post, regarding DRM, for starters, and then this bit on secrecy in science for variety. I keep going back.
