This Colorization algorithm is hella impressive. Be sure to scroll down to see the other applications (recoloring) below.

I saw a similar approach (and maybe linked to it here a while ago?) that let you mark areas in the same way but in different images to have the algorithm adaptatively merge the images.

mahlon	There was a product a few years back (trying like crazy to remember the name) that allowed you to do something similar, but not for colorization - to separate items from their backgrounds. (I think it was a Photoshop plugin.) Worked amazingly well in the vast majority of the cases - saving you from the hells of path manipulations.a

starfighter	reminds me of "image analoies", where they create some really cool pictures. i think they're able to do it in realtime too. i bet you were then one who got this to my attention, tho.
